Finally, it’s a go. The 55-year-old Miami Beach Convention Center will get the overhaul it so desperately deserves now that the Miami Beach City Commission has selected two teams of developers, architects and investors to proceed with the ambitious plan.

Beach Commission OKs convention center process

Miami Beach commissioners voted 6-1 Wednesday to begin the process of negotiations and procuring letters of intent for the long planned renovation of the convention center, which is located at 1901 Convention Center Drive, the South Florida Business Journal reported. The commission also voted to shortlist developers Portman CMC and South Beach ACE.

Portman-CMC on short list for MB convention center

Portman-CMC, one of top two groups seeking to expand the Miami Beach Convention Center, could begin negotiations soon on letters of intent, a sign of progress in the long-talked-about project. Miami Beach interim city manager Kathie Brooks asks the city commission to short list the top two proposers: Portman CMC including developer Ugo Colombo and Cirque du Soleil; and Robert Wennett’s South Beach ACE. The two groups would move on to the next phase of the vetting process for the expansion project, which would also include development of a convention center hotel.

No wrongdoing found in CMC payment on convention project

Miami Beach’s city attorney said state prosecutors found no evidence of any wrongdoing in a payment by CMC Group to a businessman now embroiled in a public-corruption scandal. CMC president Ugo Colombo told The Miami Herald that Peninsula Development approached him in January about forming a team to bid on the project. In a subsequent statement, the company said CMC then paid Peninsula “for time and expenses that Peninsula said it incurred” after CMC ended a month of negotiations and decided not to enter into a partnership.

The Miami Herald editorial department noted the historic significance of  the project to overhaul the  55-year-old Miami Beach Convention Center and commented the Miami Beach City Commission for the selection of two teams of developers, architects and investors to proceed with the ambitious plan.

In the end, Miami Beach commissioners chose wisely in selecting the two teams charged with creating design proposals.

One team includes Portman-CMC, the developer who built the 14-block Peachtree Center in Atlanta, and its partners, Miami condo developer Ugo Colombo, Cirque du Soleil and the Bal Harbour Shops.

The other team includes South Beach ACE, which built Disney World’s Swan and Dolphin hotels’ resort complex; local developer Robert Wennet, who was instrumental in revitalizing Miracle Mile in Coral Gables; and renowned architect Rem Koolhas. These are heavy hitters with solid credentials to bring the convention center into the 21st Century.
